The Psychological Causes of Vision Decline

Rethinking Vision Decline: Beyond Age and Genetics

Nov 2025 by Pati McDermott, CHT

The Impact of Trauma and Emotional Stress on Eye Health

Most people accept vision decline as a part of life, especially as we get older. However, vision decline at a younger age can be caused by traumatic events that are resolvable using Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). There is also a psychological component to age-related vision decline and eye diseases. For example, the right eye is associated with the future, and the left eye with the past. If you are having vision issues with your right eye, are you experiencing problems related to seeing your future? And if it's the left eye, is there something you don't want to look at in your past?

Harnessing NLP to Address the Mind-Body Connection

With NLP, we believe that there is a psychological component to all illnesses. Medical intervention might be needed, such as with a broken bone or a kitchen knife accident. But even with an accident, there is a psychological aspect to that injury. What was happening at the time of the accident? Were you upset about something or distracted? Were you tired from lack of sleep or nutrition? Sometimes, the cause of an illness can be entirely psychological, including diseases of the eyes.

Blending Medical and Holistic Strategies for Eye Disease

Integrative ophthalmology teaches us about the effects of traumatic events, stress, poor nutrition, lack of exercise, and unhealthy lifestyle in creating blindness-causing diseases. Whether you choose a conventional ophthalmological approach (eye drops, eye injections, and surgery) or a holistic ophthalmological approach (eye exercises and nutrition), there is a psychological component that can be addressed using NLP. NLP is effective at resolving traumas and stress, adopting healthy lifestyle choices, overcoming bad eating habits-especially sugar addiction, which is one of the causes of these diseases-and maintaining a lifelong healthy lifestyle leading to overall good health and longevity.

Resolving Past Baggage and Shaping a Healthier Future

Eye diseases are completely reversible when we look at the whole picture of what is going on with you and your life. I have many years of experience helping people resolve old baggage from the past. I also help people make good decisions and look forward to creating their chosen future. With most of my clients, that is where we start.

Transforming Mental Patterns to Support Healing

NLP utilizes powerful and effective mental patterning that gently and congruently helps the mind move toward the health outcomes it always wants. The mind loves to have new tools. NLP is based on natural brain technology and can change the mental patterns that are creating disease.

Nutrition, Movement, and Emotional Wellbeing

You might feel that you have a healthy diet and lifestyle habits. If you have any kind of serious health challenges, whatever you are doing is probably not enough. Your current protocol, including your mental and emotional states, is how you got where you are. Together, we can use mind-body communication tools to determine what your body needs that it isn't getting. We can resolve any mental and emotional factors, address deep programming such as limiting beliefs, and clear the way for the most advanced NLP tools to resolve even the most serious health problems. If you are working with an eye doctor, be sure that you can ask the question, "Why is this happening?" and get a real answer about what caused your problems and what can be done to solve them. If you are using prescription medications for glaucoma, for example, you probably need those drops, but they might not prevent blindness in the long run, and there are other ways to bring down eye pressure, including exercise and meditation. Glaucoma is related to the lymphatic system, which can be greatly helped with movement. It's a disease of stress. The eyes are related to the adrenal glands and the liver and respond to cleansing, particularly the cleansing of heavy metals. Blood sugar and inflammation are key factors in all eye diseases, especially macular degeneration. Removing sugar and eating an anti-inflammatory diet can be significant. These diseases are also caused by lack of circulation, which can be due to aging but can be alleviated in multiple ways. Blockages of energy to the eyes might be caused by issues with unresolved anger, fear, or anxiety, which can be resolved with NLP.

Building Sustainable Wellness

We all know that we should be eating healthy, hydrating, and moving, but are often met with resistance and myriad excuses. I specialize in coaching people to make gradual, congruent improvements, focusing on adding new healthy practices rather than thinking too much about what to stop. Healthy habits replace unhealthy ones, leading to feeling better so that these changes become permanent for long-term good health. Good gut health is especially important for resolving all health problems.

Consultation and Educational Approach

I have the most advanced level of training in the health applications of NLP available anywhere in the world. Before certifying in NLP, starting in 1990 as a hypnotherapist, I was helping people with serious health issues. I am currently training to become a certified nutrition coach, tying together my lifelong passion for healthy eating and longevity. My fees are on a sliding scale, and all my sessions are by telephone, making my work available to as many people as possible. I offer a free initial consultation to discuss your problems and your goals, and how I can help you. Contact me today. This information is not intended to offer medical advice or to replace the care of a trained medical practitioner. A team approach is encouraged but not required when working with me. My work is educational in nature and designed to assist you in finding your own path towards healing.
